  • What makes a good Logo Design(current)

checklist of main things to look for in a logo design. Simple, Legibility, Timeless,

What makes a good Logo Design

Clients often ask me what makes a good Logo Design.

Well, let me ask YOU, what logo(s) you like and why you like them?

Does it have to do with the choice of colours?

Or perhaps the the style of lettering?

Maybe its the combination of the two? Whatever it was it worked.  It drew your attention to it.

Now can you try to draw it from memory?  Or are  you able to describe exactly what its like to someone else?

Lets take the Coca Cola logo, that we all know. This is an excellent example of good design. Its only made up of lettering( text), yet its so effective!

Why?

Let me explain below.

According to experts in this field, a well designed logo should tick the 5 following boxes;

  1. It must be SIMPLE in its form, shape and use of colours, a simple logo is more readily memorable than a complex one.
  2. It should be MEMORABLE, it ought to stand out from the rest so you remmember it.
  3. VERSATILITY is another key point to be considered good logo design, it must be legible in big format as well small to be used as icons, banners, letterheads, thus the simplicity of the logo is crucial for this reason.
  4. Next it should be TIMELESS, by this we mean that if you use very modern fonts, (typefaces) your logo is most likely to become outdated more quickly. So think if this is what you want. If your strategy is to UPDATE your logo within the next 5-10 years then this is the right option. But if this is not the case, then use a Serif Font which portrays tradition, sophistication and a more formal tone.
  5. The choice of fonts (typefaces), say a great deal about the type of company, and must be APPROPRIATE, in other words, the fonts used should communicate to the audience what the company is about. For instance, modern fonts are used to convey feelings of exclusivity, intelligence, and style.

Every Font has a different personality and purpose, so if the message  you want to give is to be Modern, humanistic and Neutral, then Sans Serif Fonts are the recommended, FUTURA, GIL SANS, HELVETICA or VERDANA are just a few examples. whereas, if you want

So going back to the Coca Cola logo, and the use of red.  According to the Pshychology of Colour, red stands for ambition, confidence, strength, energy and desire.  It is also shown to increase respiration rate, blood pressure and enhance metabolism!

Now do you understand why Coca Cola chose red?

I hope this has helped you.

My next post will be about the Pshychology of Fonts, so look out for it.
